The Conservative Party - main issues
The Conservative Party was formed by Robert Peel from what was left of the old Tory party in the 1830s.
Originally, the party of the Church, aristocracy and landed gentry, it has increasingly been supported by large business interests. Under Mrs Thatcher, the party moved away from `One Nation' Conservatism towards a set of policies aimed at business, the consumer and the upwardly mobile.
The Conservative Party is the party of the Right, identified with the idea of economic freedom. It has successfully portrayed itself as the party of patriotism. It represents the interests of the capitalist class, the rich and privileged. It receives a lot of money from major business and financial institutions.
It puts great emphasis on the importance of law and order and the maintenance of strong armed forces to protect British interests.
