HOSTS File The HOSTS file is a text file that contains IP address-to-host name mappings.
The following list describes the HOSTS file:
A single entry consists of an IP address corresponding to one or more host
A HOSTS file must reside on each computer.
The HOSTS file is used by ping and other TCP/IP utilities to resolve a host
name to an IP address on both local and remote networks.
In Windows XP Professional, the HOSTS file can also be used to resolve
NetBIOS names if necessary.
The HOSTS file can be edited with any text editor. When first viewing the
HOSTS file, its content is empty. It requires an administrator to add entries.
