HOSTS File The HOSTS file is a text file that contains IP address-to-host name mappings.
The following list describes the HOSTS file:
 A single entry consists of an IP address corresponding to one or more host
names.
 A HOSTS file must reside on each computer.
 The HOSTS file is used by ping and other TCP/IP utilities to resolve a host
name to an IP address on both local and remote networks.
 In Windows XP Professional, the HOSTS file can also be used to resolve
NetBIOS names if necessary.
 The HOSTS file can be edited with any text editor. When first viewing the
HOSTS file, its content is empty. It requires an administrator to add entries.
