Naturalism in American literature
The subject matter deals with those raw and unpleasant experiences which reduce characters to `degrading behaviour in their struggle to survive'. The characters come from lower classes - poor, uneducated and unsophisticated.
The setting is commonplace and unheroic.
Fate affects characters - they are controlled by environment, heredity, chance or instinct (the struggle for life can become heroic and the characters maintain human dignity).
