Class Identity in the United Kingdom
The upper class - had stately homes and aristocratic backgrounds,
The middle-class - had semi-detached houses, suits and bowler hats,
The working class - had council flats and fish and chips,
However, the class system has survived in Britain because of its flexibility and it has always been possible to work your way up.
Bourgeois
The lower classes' difficulty in distinguishing between higher classes was reflected in the foreign word bourgeois, often translated into English as `middle-class'. Those who believed that bourgeoisie ruled the country sometimes confusingly termed the upper class the `middle-class' or the `upper-middle class'. In fact, the bourgeoisie consisted of the urban elite whose wealth was based on commerce and trade.
