Non linear but lossless dielectric A more general form of behaviour, which admits of some non-linearity in the material,
but still does not involve energy loss, is described by the equation

where χe(E) is now a dimensionless dielectric susceptibility which depends on the
magnitude of the electric field strength. This model is of theoretical use in establishing
certain energy conservation theorems, but is not much needed for description of practical
materials as dielectrics are generally highly linear until breakdown is reached.
