Modern English - English spoken on the territory of the British Isles from the middle of the 15th century onwards. In fact, many authors postulate the existence of Early Modern English, as contrasted with Late Modern English which should be recognised because the leap from Middle English to Modern English would hardly have been possible without postulating some intermediary period in the history of the language. The Early Modern English period, defined with the time frames 1450-1650, was a period of great changes, e.g. Caxton's introduction of the printing press which greatly facilitated and accelerated the process of formation of a standard language. The beginning of the Modern English period is commonly associated with the beginning of a great change in the English sound system, that is the Great Vowel Shift - a major change in the history of English that resulted in the transformation of English pronunciation, though not uniformly in all dialects of English.
